Ouro Preto in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais, far away from the Atlantic coast, is a well preserved baroque town with a bit less than a hundred thousand inhabitants today-but it may well have been the wealthiest and most powerful city on the American continent around 1700 when, under the name of “Vila Rica,” it provided the Portuguese Crown with gold and precious stones.
